It is ¥360 for 6 off the Kodama non-reserved car.

From Tokyo StationTokyo Station to Atami: Odoriko, Kodama and local trains compared
In short: the Kodama for speed, the Odoriko for peace of mind about luggage and seats, and local trains for the fare. All reach Atami from Tokyo Station with no change.
| Train | Journey time (guide) | Seats | Stops and frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kodama Shinkansen | 43–45 min (just under 40 min from Shinagawa) | Reserved and non-reserved | Every Kodama and some Hikari stop at Atami. The Nozomi does not. Kodama trains run roughly twice an hour during the day |
| Odoriko limited express | About 1 hr 20 min | Ordinary cars are all reserved (with a "seat-unspecified ticket" you can also sit in any free seat) | Also stops at Shinagawa and Yokohama. Some trains run only on set days, so check the times for your day on the booking screen |
| Tokaido Line local train | About 1 hr 40 min – 1 hr 55 min | Ordinary cars are non-reserved. The Green Car (double-decker) is also non-reserved | Some run through with no change. 6 may not get seats together |
Since 14 March 2026, Tokyo–Atami tickets are separate for the Shinkansen and conventional lines. If you go by Shinkansen and come back on the Odoriko, buy each one way separately. You cannot ride a conventional line on a Shinkansen ticket.
Luggage decidesSuitcases over 160 cm cannot ride the Kodama non-reserved car
In short: if you have a suitcase whose 3 sides add up to more than 160 cm, take the Kodama only in a reserved seat booked as a "seat with an oversized baggage area"; otherwise take the Odoriko or a local train.
1. The Shinkansen needs a booking JR Central
On the Tokaido Shinkansen, luggage whose 3 sides add up to more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm is "oversized baggage". To bring it on, you need to book a seat with an oversized baggage area (no extra charge). It cannot go in non-reserved cars, and bringing it into a reserved car without booking costs a ¥1,000 fee.
2. Few oversized-baggage seats JR Central
They are at the back of some reserved cars, and the luggage goes behind the seats. A Kodama does not have many of them, so if the suitcases for 6 are large, book early. Strollers, wheelchairs and sports equipment need no booking whatever their size.
3. No booking on the Odoriko and local trains JR East
By the rules, up to 2 items per person, with 3 sides adding up to no more than 250 cm and weighing no more than 30 kg, can be brought on without booking. On local trains, luggage goes on the racks and at your feet. Check before you travel how much space for large luggage there is on the Odoriko.
The Shinkansen large-luggage rules are covered in detail in Shinkansen large luggage rules. For sending luggage ahead to your stay, see sending luggage ahead in Japan.
Fares for 6One-way fares for 6: local train ¥10,440, Odoriko ¥18,340, Kodama non-reserved ¥18,700
In short: one way from Tokyo Station to Atami for 6 is ¥10,440 by local train, ¥18,340 on the Odoriko and ¥18,700 in the Kodama non-reserved car (guide as of October 2026). The Green Car on a local train costs more than the Odoriko and takes longer.
The prices in this article are calculated for a family of 6: a couple, 2 children (elementary-school age) and the grandparents (4 adults + 2 elementary-school children). The grandparents are counted at the adult fare.
The Odoriko and the Kodama non-reserved car differ by ¥360 for 6. A Kodama reserved seat costs ¥3,000 more than the Odoriko.
| Option | 1 adult | 1 elementary-school child | Total for 6 | Journey time (guide) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tokaido Line local train | ¥2,090 | ¥1,040 | ¥10,440 | About 1 hr 40 min – 1 hr 55 min |
| Odoriko limited express (ordinary reserved seat) | ¥3,670 | ¥1,830 | ¥18,340 | About 1 hr 20 min |
| Kodama Shinkansen (non-reserved) | ¥3,740 | ¥1,870 | ¥18,700 | About 45 min |
| Local train + Green Car (Green ticket bought on Suica) | ¥3,640 | ¥2,590 | ¥19,740 | About 1 hr 50 min |
| Kodama Shinkansen (reserved, regular season) | ¥4,270 | ¥2,130 | ¥21,340 | About 45 min |
- JR child fares and limited express charges are half the adult amount (rounded down to ¥10), but Green Car charges are the same for children as for adults. That is why, for 6, the Green Car on a local train costs ¥1,400 more than the Odoriko.
- These are standard amounts, without early-purchase or online-booking discount tickets. With discounts, the gaps between options change. On weekdays, Eki-net sometimes offers tickets that halve the Odoriko limited express charge (for limited periods).
- For a return trip, double the one-way amount.
| Party (breakdown) | Odoriko limited express | Kodama non-reserved | Local train |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 (4 adults + 1 elementary-school child) | ¥16,510 | ¥16,830 | ¥9,400 |
| 6 (4 adults + 2 elementary-school children) | ¥18,340 | ¥18,700 | ¥10,440 |
| 7 (4 adults + 3 elementary-school children) | ¥20,170 | ¥20,570 | ¥11,480 |
With a different mix: on JR, preschool children travel free, up to 2 per adult or elementary-school child. But if a preschooler uses a reserved seat of their own on the Shinkansen or the Odoriko, the child fare and charge apply. Preschoolers can sit in a local train's Green Car without a Green ticket. Junior-high-school students and older pay the adult fare.
From Haneda, Narita, OsakaFrom Haneda Airport: the Kodama via Shinagawa, or a local train via Yokohama
In short: there is no direct bus from Haneda Airport to Atami. Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa and change to the Kodama, or take the Keikyu Line to Yokohama and change to a Tokaido Line local train. Shinagawa for speed, Yokohama for the fare.
| Route | Journey time (guide) | 1 adult / 1 elementary-school child | Total for 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keikyu to Shinagawa → Kodama Shinkansen (non-reserved) | About 1 hr 10 min including the change | ¥4,070 / ¥2,040 | About ¥20,360 (about ¥23,000 reserved) |
| Keikyu to Yokohama → Tokaido Line local train | About 1 hr 50 min | ¥1,810 / ¥900 | About ¥9,040 |
- On the Yokohama route, at some times of day you also change at Keikyu Kamata.
- You can also board the Odoriko at Shinagawa or Yokohama (the limited express charge changes with the boarding station, so check on the booking screen).
- At Shinagawa, the change from Keikyu to JR means walking through the station. With many suitcases, you can also send luggage ahead from the airport to your stay.
- From Narita Airport, go to Tokyo Station or Shinagawa first, then take the Odoriko or the Kodama as compared above. For comparing trains and buses from Narita into central Tokyo, see Haneda or Narita to Shinjuku with a big family of 6.
- From Osaka or Nagoya, take a Kodama or one of the Hikari that stop at Atami. The Nozomi does not stop at Atami. Journey time and changes vary a lot with the train, so search the route on the booking screen with "Atami" as the destination. Wherever you come from, a suitcase over 160 cm means booking a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Shinkansen.
Atami Station to your stay: bus or shuttle to seafront hotels, 1 train stop to houses near Kinomiya
In short: for the seafront onsen hotels, take a local bus from stop no. 7 or the hotel's shuttle bus; for houses near Kinomiya Station, ride the JR Ito Line 1 stop. A standard taxi takes up to 4, so 6 need 2.
One way for 6 (4 adults + 2 elementary-school children) by local bus from stop no. 7 in front of Atami Station to Atami Korakuen. About 12 minutes.
Adults ¥280, children ¥140 (as of October 2026).
- Local bus: buses for Atami Port and Atami Korakuen leave from stop no. 7. You can pay for the whole family with one transport IC card (tell the driver how many before you tap). Cash gets no change, so have coins ready. There is no luggage space on the bus; put suitcases on an empty seat or hold them firmly in the aisle.
- Hotel shuttles: Atami Korakuen Hotel's free shuttle bus leaves the station 9:40–19:10 (2 buses every 40 minutes; when it is full you may not get on). Hotel Ohnoya's leaves the station every 30 minutes, 13:50–17:20 (the Rakuten listing says it must be booked by phone). TAOYA Atami also runs a shuttle bus. Check the times with the hotel.
- Hotels you can walk to, and a hotel with free taxis: Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Atami is about 7 minutes on foot from Atami Station. At Atami Pearl Star Hotel, you can use a taxi between Atami Station and the hotel free once at check-in and once at check-out (check when you book how many taxis are covered for 6).
- Houses near Kinomiya: from Atami Station it is 1 stop, 2–3 minutes, on the JR Ito Line to Kinomiya Station, ¥800 one way for 6 (adults ¥160, elementary-school children ¥80). From Kinomiya Station to your stay is about 5–10 minutes on foot. The Ito Line runs 1–3 trains an hour during the day, so check the time before you go through the gates.
- Taxis: you can board in front of Atami Station. A standard taxi takes up to 4, so 6 with luggage need 2. The maximum taxi fare in Atami starts at ¥700 for the first 1.15 km. To ride in one taxi as 6, book a large taxi in advance (ask the company for the fare).
How to choose where to stay, and how to reach each one from the station, are in where a big family of 6 can share one room in Atami.
PassThe JR Tokyo Wide Pass does not pay off for Atami alone
In short: for a return trip to Atami only, buying Odoriko tickets one way at a time is cheaper than the JR Tokyo Wide Pass. If your family will also go to places such as Nikko or Karuizawa within the 3 days, it is worth considering.
- The JR Tokyo Wide Pass is a JR East pass for holders of foreign passports, valid for 3 consecutive days. Many travel sites give the price as ¥16,000 for adults (12 and over) and ¥8,000 for children (6–11), while some say ¥15,000 and ¥7,500, and we could not confirm it on JR East's official page (as of October 2026).
- It is said to cover conventional lines towards Atami and Ito and the Odoriko limited express. It cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Kodama). Check the coverage before you buy.
- Passes for 6 cost ¥75,000–80,000 at either price. A Tokyo–Atami return on the Odoriko is ¥36,680 for 6, so for Atami alone you lose around ¥40,000.
Touring Atami plus Nikko, Karuizawa or similar in 3 days: the JR Tokyo Wide Pass
A return trip to Atami alone does not pay it back. Check the coverage and the price on the product page before you buy (the Tokaido Shinkansen is not covered).

Honest caveats
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
JR East section fares are fare-search site values
JR East's official pages could not be read automatically, so the local train, Odoriko and Green Car amounts come from a fare-search site and news reports. Check on the booking screen before you travel.
We could not confirm the JR Tokyo Wide Pass price and coverage officially
Travel sites give 2 different prices, and we could not confirm on JR East's official site whether Atami and the Odoriko are covered. Check before you buy.
We do not know the large-luggage space on the Odoriko
We checked the rules on the size and number of items you may bring, but not how much space for them there is on board.
We do not give taxi fares
Taxi fares from Atami Station to your stay vary with distance and time of day, so we did not calculate them. We give only the starting maximum fare.
We do not list Odoriko times
Some trains run only on set days, so we do not give times. Check the times for your day on the booking screen.
Child-fare categories
Child-fare categories are defined differently by each operator, and the official sites do not always state them. In this article we write only what we could confirm, and leave out anything we could not confirm. Always check how ages and headcounts are counted when you book.
Getting to Atami: FAQ
For a big family from Tokyo to Atami, is the Shinkansen or the Odoriko better?
With a suitcase over 160 cm, the Odoriko is the one where the rules let you bring it on without booking (check the space on board before you travel). To arrive sooner, book a seat with an oversized baggage area in a Kodama reserved car. One way for 6 is ¥18,340 on the Odoriko, ¥18,700 in the Kodama non-reserved car and ¥21,340 reserved (guide as of October 2026).
Is there a direct bus from Haneda Airport to Atami?
No. Take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa and the Kodama Shinkansen (about 1 hour 10 minutes), or the Keikyu Line to Yokohama and a Tokaido Line local train (about 1 hour 50 minutes).
Can we go by Shinkansen and come back on the Odoriko?
Yes. Since 14 March 2026, Tokyo–Atami tickets are separate for the Shinkansen and conventional lines, so buy each one way separately for the outward and return trips.
Can 6 of us take a taxi from Atami Station to our stay?
A standard taxi takes up to 4, so 6 split into 2. To ride in one, book a large taxi in advance, or use the hotel shuttle bus or a local bus.
If you also head out of Tokyo after Atami
The JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers 3 consecutive days. For a return trip to Atami alone, buying Odoriko tickets one way at a time is cheaper.
For local bus times and fares from Atami Station, see the official Tokai Bus site (not an affiliate; in Japanese).
