A day on Hatsushima is set by the boat times.
Cross on a morning boat, come back one before the last
Hatsushima is an island about 4 km round, some 30 minutes by boat from Atami Port, with a garden overlooking the sea, outdoor athletics courses and fishermen's restaurants in front of the harbour. But the boat is the only way there, and the last boat back leaves at 17:50, so fitting a big family to the timetable takes some planning. This article builds a day for 6 around the boat times, with the cost and places where the family can split up for a while.

Boat timesThe boat times set the shape of the day
In short: the boat takes about 30 minutes each way, with 10 return sailings a day in the usual period. Crossing on the 10:00 from Atami and coming back on the 14:40 or 16:40 from Hatsushima is a comfortable shape for 6.
| Sailing | From Atami Port | From Hatsushima Port |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7:30 | 8:00 |
| 2 | 8:40 | 9:20 |
| 3 | 10:00 | 10:40 |
| 4 | 10:40 | 11:20 |
| 5 | 12:00 | 13:00 |
| 6 | 13:00 | 14:00 |
| 7 | 14:00 | 14:40 |
| 8 | 14:40 | 15:20 |
| 9 | 16:00 | 16:40 |
| 10 | 17:20 | 17:50 (last) |
- In winter, sailings are cut for a long stretch: while the boats are under maintenance, a "dock timetable" runs with 7 return sailings a day. In the operator's notice of October 2026, this period is 4 November to 24 December 2026 and 5 January to 10 February 2027 (the usual 10 returns a day run from 25 December to 4 January). The 10:00 from Atami becomes 10:40, and the 14:40 from Hatsushima is dropped, leaving 13:20 or 15:20 (the 16:40 and 17:50 from Hatsushima remain). The dates can change depending on the maintenance, so check the timetable for your day on the official site.
- Seats on the boat cannot be booked. Once a boat reaches capacity, you may not get on the sailing you want. On busy days in Japan's long holidays (such as Golden Week), aim for one boat earlier.
- From Atami Station to Atami Port, the local bus from stop 7 in front of the station (for Atami Port and Atami Korakuen) takes about 15 minutes, and a taxi about 10 minutes. With regular taxis you would need 2, so the bus is the simple choice. How to pay on the bus is in Tokyo and Haneda to Atami with a big family of 6.
- Each passenger may take up to 2 pieces of hand luggage into the cabin. Leave suitcases at your accommodation and cross with day bags.
For 6, the set ticket at the Atami Port counter settles the cost
The prices in this article are for a family of 6: parents, 2 children (elementary school) and grandparents.
In short: for 4 adults and 2 elementary school children, the boat return and Asian Garden entry come to ¥19,400 paid separately, or ¥17,500 with the set ticket at the Atami Port counter. The set ticket is only sold at the Atami Port counter.
| Group | Set ticket total |
|---|---|
| 5 (4 adults + 1 elementary school child) | ¥15,750 |
| 6 (4 adults + 2 elementary school children) | ¥17,500 |
| 7 (4 adults + 3 elementary school children) | ¥19,250 |
| How you buy | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Boat return only | Adults ¥2,900 × 4 + children ¥1,450 × 2 | ¥14,500 |
| Boat return + R-Asia entry paid separately | ¥14,500 + adults ¥950 × 4 + children ¥550 × 2 | ¥19,400 |
| R-Asia set ticket (boat return + R-Asia entry) | Adults ¥3,500 × 4 + children ¥1,750 × 2 | ¥17,500 |
| Island bath set ticket (boat return + R-Asia + island bath) | Adults ¥4,000 × 4 + children ¥2,050 × 2 | ¥20,100 (the operator's figures. PICA Hatsushima's island bath page shows adults ¥3,900 and children ¥2,000, so check at the counter) |
Boat return + Asian Garden for 4 adults and 2 elementary school children (counter set ticket).
Paid separately it is ¥19,400, a difference of ¥1,900.
- If only the children go on the VOTAN athletics course, put the 2 children on the VOTAN set ticket (¥1,950) and the 4 adults on the R-Asia set ticket: ¥17,900.
- If your group is different: adults are junior high school age and up, children are elementary school age. Preschool children ride the boat free, 1 per adult (from the second, the elementary school fare; under 1 year old free), and there is no set ticket for them. Preschool children aged 3 and over pay the Asian Garden entry (¥550) on the island. For example, 4 adults + 1 elementary school child + 1 four-year-old comes to ¥16,300.
- Grandparents pay the adult fare. We found no age-based adult discount on the official fare tables for the boat or the island facilities.
- Set tickets are not sold on Thursdays, when facilities are closed. Once bought, they cannot be refunded even if unused.
- At the counter you can pay by cash, credit card, e-money or QR code payment.
Buy boat and Asian Garden tickets at the Atami Port counter
There is currently no partner that sells the boat and Asian Garden ticket online. Buy the set ticket at the Atami Port counter (¥17,500 for 4 adults and 2 elementary school children). No booking is needed; check the service status on the morning and then go to the counter.
For times, fares and the day's service status, see the Hatsushima Resort Line (Fujikyu Marine Resort) official site (in Japanese).
The official site is not an affiliate partner. Child categories follow the operator's fare table.
A day on the island: where children play and where grandparents can wait
In short: the island's play areas are all within walking distance of the harbour. Children do the athletics in the morning, lunch is at the harbour restaurants, the afternoon is a slow one in the garden, and you head back to the harbour for your boat.
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10:00 | Leave Atami Port → arrive Hatsushima Port around 10:30 |
| Morning | Athletics for the children: VOTAN (no booking, up to 60 minutes a session) or SARUTOBI, which crosses through the treetops (booking required, about 1 to 1.5 hours) |
| Lunch | Seafood rice bowls or set meals at the restaurants in front of the harbour, or the ENAK terrace restaurant |
| Afternoon | Hammocks and swings at the Asian Garden R-Asia. If you use the island bath, men and women go in separately |
| 14:40 | Leave Hatsushima → arrive Atami Port around 15:10 (if you use the island bath, 16:40 from Hatsushima → Atami Port around 17:10) |
In the period with 7 return sailings a day, go on the 10:40 from Atami Port and come back on the 13:20, 15:20 or 16:40 from Hatsushima.
1. SARUTOBI: 1 parent for up to 2 children Checked with official site
A treetop course crossed in a harness. Adults (junior high school and up) ¥1,900, elementary school children ¥1,500. Children must be 5 or older and at least 110 cm tall, and booking is online only (same day possible, no phone bookings). From age 5 to elementary school, a guardian aged 20 or over must take part, and 1 guardian can look after up to 2 children. With 2 elementary school children, 1 parent crosses with them (¥4,900 for the 3). No sandals; gloves are needed (¥300 if you have none).
2. VOTAN: 60 minutes, no booking Checked with official site
10 ground-level athletics stations. ¥600 for anyone aged 3 and over, adult or child, and preschool children go in with a guardian. There is no toilet on the site. It may be closed on rainy days and after rain.
3. Asian Garden R-Asia: a place for grandparents Checked with official site
A garden of subtropical plants with swings and hammocks looking out over the sea. ENAK food can be taken away and eaten in the garden. The Oshima cherry is at its best around March to April. A walking path runs alongside part of the SARUTOBI course, so family members who do not cross can watch and take photos from below.
- Island bath (Shima no Yu), an open-air bath with a sea view: adults ¥900, elementary school children ¥600 (R-Asia entry is separate). The indoor and open-air baths are separate for men and women, so you split up, for example father with son and mother with daughter. For up to what age a child can go in with the parent of the other gender, see Japanese onsen: up to what age can a child bathe with the parent of the other gender?. People with tattoos are not admitted (onsen and tattoo rules).
- Walking round the island, from the harbour past the lighthouse and Hatsuki Shrine, takes about 90 minutes. If walking is hard for the grandparents, a whole day works with just the garden and the area around the harbour.
Lunch: the harbour restaurants, or a BBQ table for 6
In short: in front of the harbour is a row of restaurants run by island fishermen, serving seafood rice bowls and sashimi set meals. If you want to be sure of one table for all 6, you can book ENAK's BBQ, with up to 6 per table.
- The harbour restaurants have no fixed closing days (each sets its own). Plan on eating at whichever is open on the day.
- ENAK BBQ: booking required, 80 minutes, up to 6 per table, so a family of 6 fills one table exactly. Courses are ¥4,500–5,500 for adults, and the Kids course (age 4 to elementary school) is ¥2,500. With 4 adults at ¥4,500 and 2 children on the Kids course, it comes to ¥23,000. R-Asia entry is charged separately.
- ENAK's café and restaurant are open 11:00–16:00 (last order 15:00), and the BBQ 10:30–16:00 (last order 14:30).
When boats do not run, or you miss the boat
In short: the boat stops when the sea is rough. The operator does not publish a threshold for cancellation, so check the service status on the official site on the morning before heading to Atami Port.
- Under the operator's rules, sailings may be cancelled or changed when weather or sea conditions make them unsafe. The day's service status appears at the top of the Hatsushima Resort Line official site.
- Under the operator's terms of carriage, boat tickets for a sailing you could not take because of a cancellation are refunded with no fee. If you choose not to use a ticket and ask for a refund, there is a fee (up to ¥200). Set tickets are stated to be non-refundable once bought, so on days when the weather looks doubtful, buy boat-only tickets at the counter or ask there.
- If you are worried that the return boats may stop while you are on the island, come back on an earlier boat. PICA Hatsushima has accommodation on the island.
- The last boat from the island leaves Hatsushima at 17:50. If you miss it, there is no scheduled boat back to Atami that day. Aim for the boat before the last one.
- On a day when the boats do not run, switch to a day in Atami. A day of the large bath at your accommodation and a walk along the Atami seafront is easy on all 6 (a big family of 6 in one room in Atami).
Honest notes (4 things we could not confirm)
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
The price of the island bath set ticket
The operator shows adults ¥4,000 and children ¥2,050, while PICA Hatsushima's island bath page shows adults ¥3,900 and children ¥2,000, so the official sources differ. This article uses the operator's figures. Check at the counter.
Which facilities close on Thursdays
We confirmed on the official sites that the island bath closes on Thursdays (except New Year, Golden Week and the summer holidays) and that set tickets are not sold on Thursdays. We could not read the official calendars for the Asian Garden, VOTAN and ENAK, so if you go on a Thursday, check the official sites.
The threshold for cancellation
The operator does not publish how rough the sea must be for the boat to stop. Decide on the morning by the service status.
The winter maintenance period and time on the island
The dock timetable dates come from the operator's notice of October 2026 and can change depending on the maintenance. Time spent at each place on the island is a rough guide based on the official durations (SARUTOBI about 1 to 1.5 hours, about 90 minutes to walk round the island, and so on).
Hatsushima day trip (big families) FAQ
Do I need to book the boat to Hatsushima?
No. Buy a return ticket at the Atami Port counter and board. But once a boat reaches capacity you may not get on the sailing you want, so on busy days take an earlier boat.
Can I buy the return ticket on Hatsushima?
Tickets are not sold at Hatsushima Port. Buy a return at Atami Port.
How much is the boat fare for young children?
Preschool children ride free, 1 per adult. From the second, the elementary school fare applies. Under 1 year old is free.
Is there a discount for grandparents?
We found no age-based adult discount on the official fare tables for the boat or the island facilities (as of October 2026). Count them at the adult fare.
Are there days when it is better not to go to Hatsushima?
On Thursdays many facilities, including the island bath, are closed (they open over New Year, Golden Week and the summer holidays), and set tickets are not sold, so it is safest to avoid them. On rough days the boat may be cancelled, so check the service status on the morning.
