Namba to Kyoto and back for 6 from ¥6,520.
What decides it is not the price but which station you arrive at in Kyoto.
With grandparents and children, one change, and a seat if possible. A return trip from Namba to Kyoto, including the subway, is ¥6,520–8,200 for 6 (each company's official fares as of October 2026, 4 adults + 2 elementary-school children). The difference between the cheapest, Hankyu, and the most expensive, JR, is ¥1,680. A bigger difference comes from choosing the train that arrives near where you want to go, cutting bus fares in Kyoto and the distance the grandparents have to walk.

Where you arrive in KyotoThe 3 railways each arrive at a different station in Kyoto
In short: Hankyu, Keihan and JR all arrive at different stations in Kyoto. Choose by how close you get to where you want to go rather than by the price difference (up to ¥1,680 for 6).
1. Hankyu: to Shijo-Kawaramachi and Arashiyama Hankyu Railway
Arrives at Karasuma (connected to Shijo Station on the subway Karasuma Line) and Kyoto-kawaramachi. Nishiki Market and Shijo-Kawaramachi are here. For Arashiyama, change at Katsura on the way.
2. Keihan: to Gion, Kiyomizu-dera and Demachiyanagi Keihan Railway
Arrives at Shichijo, Kiyomizu-gojo, Gion-shijo, Sanjo and Demachiyanagi. Fushimi-inari is also on the way, but limited expresses do not stop at Kiyomizu-gojo or Fushimi-inari.
3. JR: to Kyoto Station and beyond JR West
Arrives at Kyoto Station. Choose it on days when you continue on the Sagano Line or Nara Line from Kyoto Station, or when your plans are around Kyoto Station.
- For all of them, you first take the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line from Namba and then change. In the 9 o'clock hour in the morning, the Midosuji Line runs every 2–3 minutes.
- You can also take JR from JR Namba Station, but that means 2 changes (Shin-Imamiya and Osaka) and costs more: ¥9,600 return for 6.
- There is also a route from Kintetsu's Osaka-Namba Station to Kyoto Station, but we could not confirm its fare and journey time on official sources, so it is not compared in this article.
- If you set out from a hotel near a station other than Namba (Shinsaibashi, Teradacho and so on), the subway section and fare change. The amounts in this article are for boarding at Namba Station.

- If one of the children is below elementary-school age (1–5), then on the subway, Hankyu, Keihan and JR, up to 2 infants travelling with someone aged 6 or over ride free. With 6 people, the amount is the same as in the 5-person column.
- The child fare applies from age 6 to under 12 on the subway, Hankyu and Keihan, and to elementary-school children on JR.
- Hankyu fares are from the fare table in Hankyu Railway's passenger regulations (18 March 2026 edition) (Osaka-umeda → Karasuma or Kyoto-kawaramachi: adult ¥410. Fares have not changed since the April 2023 revision).
For a seat, board at the starting station. For a guaranteed seat, a ¥500 reserved seat per person
In short: if you want to sit, choose Hankyu (Osaka-umeda) or Keihan (Yodoyabashi), where you board at the starting station. For a guaranteed seat, add a reserved seat at ¥500 per person.
| Car | Price | Which trains | Family facilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hankyu PRiVACE | ¥500 per person | Coupled to limited expresses and others (car 4 from the Osaka-umeda end) | Priority seats for people with buggies, a luggage area for a folded buggy, and seats where a child seat can be used |

- Reserved seats for all 6 add ¥3,000 each way if children pay the same as adults. We could not confirm whether there is a child price.
- JR Special Rapid trains also have a paid-seat car, but we could not confirm the price or car number.
- On Keihan, some trains have a space for wheelchairs and buggies at the Osaka end.
Passes and day tickets do not pay off for a single return trip
In short: for just one return trip from Namba to Kyoto, every pass and day ticket costs more than paying the fares for 6. Consider Keihan's day ticket only on days when you ride Keihan many times in Kyoto.
| Ticket | Price | Return fare to compare | For one return trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keihan Kyoto-Osaka Sightseeing Pass (for overseas visitors, 1 day) | ¥1,650 (¥1,850 for the 24-hour version) | Yodoyabashi ↔ Gion-shijo ¥980 | ¥670 worse off |
| Keihan + Osaka Metro version | ¥2,160 | Namba ↔ Gion-shijo ¥1,360 | ¥800 worse off |
| JR West Kansai Area Pass (1 day) | ¥2,800 | JR Namba ↔ Kyoto ¥1,920 | Sales ended 30 September 2026 |
- The JR Kansai Area Pass stopped being sold on 30 September 2026. Passes bought before then can be used within their validity period.
- Keihan's sightseeing pass can pay for itself on days when you stop at Fushimi-inari, Uji and so on in Kyoto and ride Keihan many times.
- Osaka Metro's 1-day pass (Enjoy Eco Card) is adult ¥820 on weekdays and ¥620 on weekends and holidays, elementary-school child ¥310, and cannot be used on private railways or JR. On weekends and holidays, on the route with a return to Umeda (adult ¥480), one more subway ride after you get back from Kyoto covers the cost. On the route with a return to Yodoyabashi (adult ¥380), it pays off on weekends and holidays when you ride at least ¥240 more on the subway.
On days when you ride Keihan many times in Kyoto: Keihan's day pass
Consider it only on days when you go round several Keihan stations, such as Fushimi-inari, Gion and Uji. For a single return trip, paying the fares as you go is cheaper.

Honest caveats
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
We could not confirm walking times or lifts at the changing stations
"Time on board" in the table does not include leaving the ticket gates and walking at Umeda or Yodoyabashi, or waiting. We have not checked step-free routes with lifts either.
Weekend and holiday frequencies are not given
Frequencies and journey times are weekday timetable examples. On weekends and holidays, check the timetable for your day of travel.
Kintetsu is not compared
We could not confirm on official sources the fare and journey time for the route from Kintetsu's Osaka-Namba Station to Kyoto Station.
We could not confirm child prices for reserved seats
Hankyu PRiVACE and the Keihan Premium Car are ¥500 per adult, but we have not checked whether there is a child price.
Child-fare categories
Child-fare categories are defined differently by each operator, and the official sites do not always state them. In this article we write only what we could confirm, and leave out anything we could not confirm. Always check how ages and headcounts are counted when you book.
