Churaumi and Shurijo from Naha without a car.
For 6, take the bus tour; if the grandparents worry you, a private car.

Okinawa Island's sights are spread from north to south: the Churaumi Aquarium in the north, Shurijo Castle in Naha, a limestone cave in the south. It is a place where people usually drive, but there are probably many families who cannot drive on a foreign licence or would rather avoid driving on the left. So this article works out how a big family staying in Naha can cover a full day without driving, comparing bus tours and a private car at real prices, down to what to do if it rains.

How to go

Two main options for a day without driving: the sightseeing bus or a private car

The answer: for a family that is not driving, a day trip comes down to two options: the scheduled sightseeing bus that leaves from and returns to Naha, or a jumbo taxi hired for the day. A day bus tour from a different company, booked through the Klook booking site, is a third option. On rainy or tired days, switch to indoor places close to Naha.

Prices in this article are for 6 people: two parents, two elementary-school children and two grandparents.

Grandparents' stamina

If you are worried about the grandparents' stamina, a private car with breaks

The answer: Course B runs about 9.5 hours, from 8:30 in the morning to 18:00 in the evening, with long stretches on the road. If the grandparents are unsure about a long bus day, hire a jumbo taxi and build in breaks.

9,200 yen

For 6, the difference between a chartered jumbo taxi (northern course, 8 hours ¥48,000)
and the Course B bus fare (¥38,800). Admission is extra either way.

1. The car costs the same however many you are Calculated from official prices

A private car is priced per vehicle, so it does not change with the number of people as long as you fit in the 10 seats (including the driver). The gap between an 8-hour charter and the Course B bus fare shrinks to about ¥13,000 for 5 and about ¥5,400 for 7.

2. Course B includes lunch Officially confirmed

The Course B bus fare includes lunch (eaten at Hotel Orion Motobu during the 180 minutes at the Churaumi Aquarium).

3. Book 2 days ahead Officially confirmed

A chartered jumbo taxi must be booked 2 days ahead. Cancelling the day before or on the day costs the full price, so families who want to decide after seeing the weather should compare this with the sightseeing bus's cancellation fees (40% the day before, 100% on the day).

Shurijo and the south

Shurijo and the south: Course A is ¥32,600 for 6

The answer: Shurijo Castle and the limestone cave at Okinawa World fit into one day on Course A of the scheduled sightseeing bus. At about 7 hours it is shorter than Course B, which makes it a good first day trip with grandparents. You cannot go inside the Seiden (main hall), though.

Rainy days

On a rainy day: a mostly indoor course, or indoor places near Naha

The answer: even in the rain, the Churaumi Aquarium and Okinawa World's limestone cave (Gyokusendo) are indoors, so most of both Course B and Course A still works. The parts where you get wet are the outdoor stops: Kouri Beach, Nakijin Castle Site, the Cornerstone of Peace, the Himeyuri Monument and so on.

Is it worth going on to Okinawa after Tokyo and Kyoto? Compiled from official information

That is your family's call, but here are three things to weigh. The inside of Shurijo's Seiden opens to visitors from 23 November 2026, the Churaumi Aquarium has no planned closures through 31 March 2027, and even on a rainy day the aquarium and the limestone cave remain as indoor options. Where to stay is in places in Naha where 6 can share one room.

Your questions answered

Day trips from Naha without a car FAQ

Can we visit the Churaumi Aquarium on a day trip without driving?

Yes. Course B of Ryukyu Bus Kotsu's scheduled sightseeing bus leaves Naha at 8:30 and returns at 18:00, with about 3 hours at the Churaumi Aquarium (including lunch). By route express bus it is about 2 hours 30 minutes from Naha Airport.

Is it OK with grandparents around 70?

Course B is long at about 9.5 hours, so one approach is to try the roughly 7-hour Course A (Shurijo and the south) first, and on the Churaumi day hire a jumbo taxi so you can rest along the way (8 hours from ¥48,000).

Can small children (5 and under) ride the bus? How much is it?

Yes. Under-6s ride free, one per adult, but without a seat. If a child needs a seat, or for a second child per adult, book at the child fare (ages 6–11), according to the booking site. The Churaumi Aquarium and Shurijo are free for under-6s.

What do we do on a rainy day?

The Churaumi Aquarium and the limestone cave at Okinawa World are indoors, so you can still enjoy the course as it is. Near Naha, DMM Kariyushi Aquarium and the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum are indoors.
