One room for 6 in Hakone exists both by the lake and in Yumoto.
The real question is which side to stay on.
Not many places in Hakone let 6 adults share one room. By the lake there are two villas with a kitchen (for up to 8 and up to 6); in Yumoto, only some inns can be booked for 6 in one room. What decides it is whether you take the ropeway to Owakudani on day two, and who makes dinner.

The answer: they differ in capacity (8 and 6 guests), meals and how far they are from the bus stop.
Party sizes in this article assume a family of 6 — two parents, two elementary-school children and two grandparents. For 7–8, Togendai; for exactly 6, both are options.

YumotoIn Yumoto, only some inns can be booked for 6 in one room
The answer: Yumoto does have places where 6 can share one room, but only some of them. The chart below records a September 2026 search of a date every two weeks over the next six months (availability changes with when you look).
This is a record of a search made in September 2026. Availability changes with when you look, so read it less as a count of days and more as a sign that only some places can be booked for 6 in one room.

How to chooseThe Togendai villa or Fourtreat Sengokuhara?
The answer: families touring Lake Ashi and Owakudani on day two, and families of 7–8, suit Togendai. For exactly 6, if you can make your own dinner, Sengokuhara works too.

1. A short trip in the morning (Togendai) Official info
About 10 minutes on foot to Togendai Station, where the ropeway starts. No need to climb up from Yumoto by the mountain railway and cable car.
2. Self check-in (Togendai) Official info
You enter with a PIN sent to you in advance, and do the paperwork on a tablet in the room.
3. Shopping until 18:00 (Sengokuhara) Official info
A-Coop Sengokuhara store is open 9:30–18:00 (until 19:00 in July–September). If you come back from the loop in the evening, you may not make it before it closes.
- Around Sengokuhara, some restaurants will pick you up in the evening (per the official site; you arrange the pick-up with the restaurant yourself).
- The official site describes the seasonal hot pot and Japanese breakfast served in the room at Sengokuhara, but prices are only shown as part of a stay plan (the price of the meals alone is not published).
- If you plan to buy food, the safe options are to shop on the way in, or to order the hot pot.
Both lakeside villas keep the family together in one place
For 7–8, Togendai; for exactly 6, Sengokuhara too. Once your dates are set, check availability first.
Prices vary by date, so check the latest on the booking page. Always declare every guest's age when you book.
For one night around Yumoto only, a Yumoto inn is easier
The answer: if you are staying one night and only seeing the Yumoto area, it is easier to pick a Yumoto place that has availability. Many are within walking distance of the station, so you need no bus.
- There are places within 10 minutes on foot of the station with rooms for 6 or more (table above).
- There are rooms for 9 and houses for 8 too, so families of 7–8 can also look in Yumoto.
- To take the ropeway or the sightseeing cruise on day two, you go up from Yumoto by the mountain railway and cable car (see Shinjuku to Hakone with a family of 6).
On the bus to Togendai, the pass works differently by company
The answer: the nearest stop to the Togendai villa, Kojiri-ue (湖尻上), is served by Izuhakone Bus, and Izuhakone Bus does not accept the Hakone Freepass (official). If you are using the Freepass, take the Hakone Tozan Bus or the ropeway to Togendai Station and walk from there.
Bus times are timetable values (*to Kojiri-ue, buses via Owakudani (mostly midday) take about 45 minutes and the others (mostly early morning and evening) about 35 minutes, as of October 2026). You pay the Izuhakone Bus fare separately from the Freepass.
- Big luggage: the Togendai villa is not on the list of properties that accept online bookings for the Hakone Carry Service at Hakone-Yumoto Station (checked September 2026; Fourtreat Sengokuhara is on it). Ask the villa before you book.
- If you cannot send your bags, take them with you on the Izuhakone Bus to Kojiri-ue (the villa is only about 2 minutes on foot from the stop).
Compare places to stay in Hakone on the map
The answer: the map shows at a glance where Yumoto and the lake side (Togendai and Sengokuhara) are. Enter your dates and party (for a big family, 6 adults) to compare availability.
How to get there from Shinjuku and which pass to choose is in Shinjuku to Hakone with a family of 6, and how to get around by ropeway and sightseeing cruise is in a big-family day loop in Hakone.
Honest caveats: before you book (5)
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
The Yumoto day counts are a record of when we searched
The counts in the Yumoto table and chart are from a Rakuten Travel search in September 2026 for 6 adults in 1 room. Availability changes with when you look, the dates and the number of people.
Bus times are timetable values
About 35–45 minutes to Kojiri-ue and about 50 minutes to Togendai are timetable values. To Kojiri-ue, buses via Owakudani (mostly midday) take about 45 minutes and the others (mostly early morning and evening) about 35 minutes (as of October 2026). Traffic can make the trip longer too.
Togendai's check-in times are from Rakuten Travel
Check-in 15:00 (last 22:00) and check-out 10:00 are from Rakuten Travel's property information; the villa's official page does not give them. Check-in is self-service, so confirm the times together with the entry steps in the guide sent after you book.
Sengokuhara's hot pot and breakfast have no price on their own
Prices are only shown as part of a stay plan. In one Rakuten Travel search for 2 adults in 1 room, the plan with dinner (seasonal hot pot) and breakfast was ¥14,300 per person (night of 10 March 2027, searched September 2026). It changes with the date and the number of people.
Distances to shops are straight-line only
From Fourtreat Sengokuhara to A-Coop Sengokuhara store and FamilyMart Hakone Sengoku-shitsugen store is about 1.6–1.7 km in a straight line; from the Togendai villa, about 3–4 km (calculated from the locations on each place's official map). We have not checked the walking routes, so plan to buy food on the way in.
