Shinjuku to Hakone for 6.
About ¥43,000 with the Freepass and the Romancecar.
Taking 6 people to Hakone raises three questions: can we all sit together, can we change trains with big luggage, and what will it cost in the end? The answer is the Hakone Freepass (2 days) plus Romancecar limited express tickets: ¥43,120 for a family of 6 (official fares as of September 2026). You can choose seats for up to 8 people at a time on the Romancecar.

Total for 6Two days for 6: ¥43,120 for the Freepass and express tickets
The answer: for a two-day, one-night trip from Shinjuku, the Freepass ¥31,600 + Romancecar express tickets (round trip) ¥11,520 = ¥43,120 (calculated from official fares as of September 2026).
Amounts in this article are calculated for a family of 6 — two parents, two elementary-school children and two grandparents.
| What you pay for | 5 (parents + 1 child + grandparents) | 6 (2 children) | 7 (3 children) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hakone Freepass (2 days) | ¥30,000 | ¥31,600 | ¥33,200 |
| Romancecar express tickets (round trip) | ¥10,360 | ¥11,520 | ¥12,680 |
| Total | ¥40,360 | ¥43,120 | ¥45,880 |
- 2-day Freepass: adults ¥7,100 × 4 + children ¥1,600 × 2 = ¥31,600
- Express tickets (ticketless, one way): adults ¥1,150 × 4 + children ¥580 × 2 = ¥5,760 → round trip ¥11,520
- Grandparents pay adult fares too. The official fare tables for the Freepass and the express charge have only adult and child categories.
- With a different mix, each extra adult adds ¥9,400 (Freepass ¥7,100 + round-trip express ticket ¥2,300).
A child's Freepass is about a quarter of an adult's (¥1,600 against ¥7,100).
Each extra child adds only ¥1,600 to the Freepass.
We have not worked out how this compares with paying section by section, because we could not confirm the section fares for the mountain railway, cable car and buses inside Hakone on the official sites.
Odakyu's travel agency (Odakyu Travel) also sells packages of round-trip Romancecar express tickets, the 2-day Hakone Freepass and a stay (check the prices on the official site).
Get the Hakone Freepass before you go
The Freepass is sold through Odakyu's EMot app, at station ticket machines, and on Klook. The Romancecar express ticket is bought separately, so don't forget it.
Klook's selling price, child fares and how you receive the pass are shown on the booking page and may differ from the official Odakyu fares used in this article. It does not include the Romancecar express ticket.

Leave big bags at Hakone-Yumoto Station and have them sent to your stay
The answer: drop your bags with the Hakone Carry Service at Hakone-Yumoto Station in the morning, and you can collect them at your accommodation from 15:00 the same day. That leaves your hands free for the rides.
| Direction | Drop off | Collect |
|---|---|---|
| Station → stay | At the station desk, 8:30–12:00 on the day (online bookings until 11:30 on the day) | At your stay from 15:00 |
| Stay → station | At your stay's front desk, by 10:00 | At the station, 13:30–18:30 |
- Price (one way, per item): regular size (length + width + height up to 140 cm, up to 15 kg) ¥1,500 / large size (up to 200 cm, up to 30 kg) ¥2,500. Three large items come to ¥7,500 one way (calculated).
- Strollers cannot be sent. Valuables, fragile items and some other things are not accepted either. Carry the stroller with you on the rides.
- Bags can only go to partner properties. When we looked at the list of properties that accept online bookings in September 2026, the Togendai villa from our stay article was not on it, and Fourtreat Sengokuhara was. Check the list or ask your stay before you book.
- The general way to send bags ahead by courier is in Japan luggage forwarding: which hotels can receive it.
To stays by the lake, the pass works differently by bus company
The answer: if you are staying by the lake (Togendai or Sengokuhara), you continue up from Hakone-Yumoto by bus. Izuhakone Bus does not accept the Hakone Freepass (official).
- Yumoto → Kojiri-ue (湖尻上): the Izuhakone Bus from bus stop 1 at Hakone-Yumoto Station, about 35–45 minutes depending on the time of day (on the timetable, buses via Owakudani (mostly midday) take about 45 minutes and the others (mostly early morning and evening) about 35 minutes, as of October 2026). You pay the fare separately from the Freepass.
- Yumoto → Togendai: the Hakone Tozan Bus (for Togendai) from bus stop 3 at Hakone-Yumoto Station, about 50 minutes by timetable. This is the one to take with the Freepass.
How to choose a stay is in Hakone for 6 in one room, and how to get around by ropeway and sightseeing cruise once you arrive is in a big-family day loop in Hakone.
From the airportOn the day you land, stay in Shinjuku and head out the next morning
The answer: rather than going all the way to Hakone on the day you land at Narita or Haneda, it is easier with children to spend a night in Shinjuku and take a morning Romancecar.
- If you go on arrival day, the Romancecar adds at least about 1 hour 15 minutes after a long journey.
- How to get from the airport to Shinjuku depends on which airport you land at (not covered in this article).
- Coming from Osaka or Nagoya, you take the shinkansen to Odawara and change to the Hakone Tozan Railway, so the fares from Shinjuku in this article do not apply.
Honest caveats
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
Amounts are calculated from official fares as of September 2026
These are calculated from the official fare tables for the Freepass and the express charge. Check the children's age bands on the official sites before you buy.
We have not compared the Freepass with buying section by section
We could not confirm the section fares for the mountain railway, cable car and buses inside Hakone on the official sites.
Bus times are timetable values
About 35–45 minutes to Kojiri-ue and about 50 minutes to Togendai are timetable values. To Kojiri-ue, buses via Owakudani (mostly midday) take about 45 minutes and the others (mostly early morning and evening) about 35 minutes (as of October 2026). Traffic can make the trip longer too.
Check prices on each booking site
This article does not give the price or how you receive the pass when buying on Klook or similar sites. Check on the booking page.
Child-fare categories
Child-fare categories are defined differently by each operator, and the official sites do not always state them. In this article we write only what we could confirm, and leave out anything we could not confirm. Always check how ages and headcounts are counted when you book.
