Fukuoka Airport to Hakata or Tenjin for 6: ¥1,300 by subway.
Land at the international terminal and there is one more change.
Fukuoka Airport's subway station is only at the domestic terminal. A family of 6 landing at the international terminal either takes the free shuttle bus to the domestic side and then the subway (¥1,300 for 6), or a direct bus with no change (¥2,000 to Hakata Station, ¥2,500 to Tenjin) (calculated from official fares as of September 2026).

Fares for 6Whichever terminal you land at, the subway is cheapest; direct buses cost ¥700–1,200 more
The answer: for 6, the subway at ¥1,300 is cheapest. From the international terminal, a direct bus with no change costs ¥700 more to Hakata Station and ¥1,200 more to Tenjin (HEARTS is ¥1,700 more).
Amounts in this article are calculated for a family of 6: two parents, two elementary-school children and two grandparents.
What the chart does not show is changes: from the international terminal, the subway means one change and a direct bus none.

- Calculation: subway ¥260 adult × 4 + ¥130 child × 2. Nishitetsu ¥400 × 4 + ¥200 × 2. Airport Express ¥500 × 4 + ¥250 × 2. HEARTS ¥600 × 4 + ¥300 × 2. ("Child" here means an elementary-school child.)
- If your party differs: with a preschooler instead of an elementary-school child, the subway is free for any number of preschoolers with a parent or guardian (¥1,170 if one of the 6 is a preschooler). Buses treat preschoolers differently by company (see the FAQ below).
Landing at the domestic terminal: the subway, 5 minutes to Hakata Station
The answer: the domestic terminal is connected to the subway station, and it is ¥1,300 for 6 and 5 minutes to Hakata Station.
- Fukuoka Airport Station is linked by escalator to the south side of the domestic terminal. There is also a lift from the terminal building down to the platform.
- 5 minutes to Hakata Station and 11 to Tenjin (Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau). In the daytime there are 7–9 trains an hour (roughly every 7–8 minutes). First train 5:43, last train 0:35 (0:00 on Sundays and holidays).
- Fares are ¥260 for adults and ¥130 for elementary-school children. Preschoolers with a parent or guardian ride free, however many.
- The only discount for people aged 65 and over is a monthly pass (Chika Pass 65), which is no use for a one-way trip as a visitor.
- Each piece of luggage up to 250 cm in total length + width + height (no side over 200 cm) and up to 30 kg rides free (Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau). No limit on the number of pieces is stated, but you may be turned away when trains are packed in the morning and evening rush. Each Airport Line car has one priority space for wheelchairs and strollers.
- A Nishitetsu local bus (route 39, to Hakata Station) also leaves from the bus stop south of the domestic terminal: about 14 minutes by rapid or about 18 minutes by local service to Hakata Bus Terminal, ¥280 for adults (Nishitetsu timetable and fare search, checked against a Saturday in October 2026). It is slower than the subway, and passengers are asked not to bring several wheeled cases aboard, so for 6 the subway is easier.
Landing at the international terminal: one change, or ¥700–1,200 more?
The answer: to take the subway from the international terminal, you add one change onto the free shuttle bus to the domestic side. With a lot of luggage, paying the difference for a direct bus is easier.
1. Shuttle bus: free, about 10 min Fukuoka Airport
From the international terminal 6:18–23:21, every 5–6 minutes in the daytime. You can get on and off by either the front or back door, and every bus has a wheelchair ramp.
2. To Hakata Station: Nishitetsu direct bus Nishitetsu
International terminal stops 6 and 7 → Hakata Station Chikushi Exit, from 15 min. ¥400 adults, ¥200 elementary-school children. 8:00–21:00, every 15 minutes in the daytime. With a ramp.
3. To Tenjin: Airport Express Nishitetsu
International terminal stop 8 → Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, 30 min. Suitcases go in the luggage hold. Credit cards not accepted.
- There is no subway station at the international terminal. After the arrivals exit, take the shuttle bus from bus stop 5, get off at the next stop ("Domestic Terminal Building shuttle bus stop"), and go in by the nearby subway entrance (1A/1B) (Fukuoka Airport guidance). Entrances 1A/1B have escalators or stairs.
- With a wheelchair or stroller, follow the airport's barrier-free route guidance and use the ticket gates on the domestic terminal side (the guidance for going from the subway to the international terminal specifies this).
- The Nishitetsu bus to Hakata Station is running as a fully cashless trial: you pay with a transport IC card or a contactless credit card. If you only have cash, tell the driver and you can still pay in cash (Nishitetsu guidance). Paying by IC card or contactless brings it to ¥380 for adults and ¥190 for elementary-school children, ¥1,900 for 6 (Nishitetsu fare guidance; the child fare is half the discounted adult fare).
- The Airport Express runs 17 times a day from the international terminal, 9:20–18:35. You load your own bags into the hold, and can ask the staff if you need help.
- The HEARTS Airport Bus (international terminal stop 11) has unreserved seating with a fixed number of seats; if it is full, you cannot board. 11 services a day.
- The difference: to Hakata Station, Nishitetsu ¥2,000 − subway ¥1,300 = ¥700; to Tenjin, Airport Express ¥2,500 − subway ¥1,300 = ¥1,200 (for 6, calculated).
Land late at night and the direct buses have finished
The answer: the direct buses finish between late afternoon and evening. If you land late, it is shuttle bus → subway, or a taxi or transfer.
The last free shuttle bus from the international to the domestic terminal.
The last subway from Fukuoka Airport Station is 0:35 (0:00 on Sundays and holidays).
- Last direct buses from the international terminal: Airport Express 18:35 / HEARTS 19:45 / Nishitetsu to Hakata Station 21:00.
- If your flight lands late at night, booking a transfer in advance lets you go straight from the terminal to your stay.
- Many of Hakata's places with rooms for 6 are unstaffed, so on a late-arrival day check how check-in works there in advance too (Hakata stays where 6 share one room).
A taxi for 6 means two cars
The answer: a standard taxi usually takes 4 passengers besides the driver, so 4 adults + 2 elementary-school children will not fit in one. To go in one vehicle, you need a large jumbo taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
- Seating capacity is counted as "1 person aged 12 or over = 1.5 children under 12" (Japan's vehicle safety standards). 4 adults + 2 elementary-school children come to about 5.3 people, which is over 4 (Fukuoka Showa Taxi says "a normal taxi takes up to 4 besides the driver").
- In two cars, you pay two fares from the airport to your stay. Fukuoka City's taxi fares were revised on 1 July 2026. Older estimates such as "about ¥X from the airport to Tenjin" no longer apply. Neither the taxi companies nor the Fukuoka City Taxi Association publish an estimate from the airport to Hakata or Tenjin under the new fares (as of October 2026).
- New fares for a standard car are, at the top of the range, "¥600 for the first 1.1 km, then ¥100 per 287 m", and at the bottom, "¥570 for 1.1 km, then ¥100 per 302 m". Each company picks within this range, so it differs slightly by company (Kyushu District Transport Bureau notice, 1 June 2026).
- From 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. there is a 20% surcharge (Fukuoka City Taxi Association fare guide). Taking two taxis off a late flight costs that much more.
- Large jumbo taxis have different capacities by company (Fukuoka Kotsu's HiAce seats 9; Fukuoka Showa Taxi's take 5 or 8 besides the driver). For the fare when you pick one up at the rank, ask each company.
- If you want the price fixed in advance, book a transfer. Fukuoka MK Taxi's "Fukuoka Airport / Hakata Station transfer" is a guide of ¥11,120 and up per car (a car that seats 4) to Fukuoka city. A vehicle that seats all 6 is the jumbo (a HiAce seating 9, according to the company), at ¥20,330 and up per car (tax included, tolls etc. extra; official listing as of 1 July 2026). Online booking closes at 17:00 two days before.
- The airport taxi ranks are on 1F at both the domestic and international terminals. On 1F of the domestic terminal, separate from standard taxis, there is a "large taxi rank" and a "reserved taxi rank" (airport rank guide).
6 people and big bags in one vehicle, to the door of your stay
Standard taxis mean two cars. A 7-seater (6 passengers, 4 bags) or 10-seater (9 passengers, 9 bags) transfer takes you all in one. With 5 or more suitcases, choose the 10-seater.
Prices change with the number of people and the vehicle type. Enter 6 passengers and your number of bags on the booking screen to see which vehicles fit.
Small children and child seats
The answer: in a taxi, carrying a child under 6 without a child seat does not break the law. That only means the obligation is waived; the safety question remains.
- Children under 6 must use a child seat (Road Traffic Act), but this is waived when a taxi or similar driver carries a passenger's child (Road Traffic Act Enforcement Order).
- Fukuoka MK Taxi's "Fukuoka Airport / Hakata Station transfer" (a pre-booked transfer plan) lets you rent a child seat as an option (¥3,300 and up per day; official listing as of 1 July 2026). Assume you cannot get one in a taxi picked up at the rank. The official pages of the other companies we checked — Fukuoka Kotsu, Fukuoka Lucky and Fukuoka Showa — say nothing about it.
- Klook's airport transfers let you filter for a child seat on the booking screen. Check the price and number of seats further into the booking.
- On the subway, child seats are not an issue. Preschoolers with a parent or guardian ride free, however many.
On to your stay in Hakata or Tenjin
The answer: how handy the subway is depends on whether your stay's nearest station is on the Airport Line.
- If you stay near an Airport Line station (Hakata, Gion, Nakasu-Kawabata, Tenjin), you get there from the domestic terminal without changing.
- Many of Hakata's places with rooms for 6 are unstaffed with no front desk; many will not let you into the room until 15:00 and cannot hold your bags either (properties' listings). Even if a transfer gets you there early in the morning, you cannot get into the room.
- Places in Hakata where 6 can share one room, and how far they are from the station, are in Hakata stays where 6 share one room.
- For a day from Hakata to Uminonakamichi (aquarium and seaside park), see Uminonakamichi with a family of 6: the aquarium and the seaside park; if you are going to the Nakasu yatai stalls in the evening, see Fukuoka's yatai stalls with a family of 6.
- Heading straight from the airport to Beppu or Huis Ten Bosch? See Fukuoka or Oita Airport to Beppu / Fukuoka or Nagasaki to Huis Ten Bosch.
Honest caveats
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
We give no taxi fare estimate
Fukuoka City's taxi fares were revised on 1 July 2026. We checked the new standard-car fare table (¥570–600 for the first 1.1 km, then ¥100 at a time) and the 20% night surcharge against the Kyushu District Transport Bureau notice and the Fukuoka City Taxi Association guide, but there is no official estimate from the airport to Hakata or Tenjin from the taxi companies or the association, and we have not calculated one. The transfer prices in the comparison are the official prices of Fukuoka MK Taxi's pre-booked plan.
The subway does not state how many bags; HEARTS does not state any luggage rules at all
For the subway, only the size and weight limit per piece (250 cm total, 30 kg) is official; how many pieces is not stated. HEARTS' official page gave neither a size nor a number.
Nishitetsu's international terminal → Hakata Station is only known as "from 15 min"
Nishitetsu only publishes the fastest journey time. Traffic makes it longer.
Only one company is confirmed to rent child seats
The only official mention we found was Fukuoka MK Taxi's airport transfer plan (¥3,300 and up per day). Its official page does not say how many seats you can rent, so check when you book. The other 3 companies said nothing about it.
Child-fare categories
Child-fare categories are defined differently by each operator, and the official sites do not always state them. In this article we write only what we could confirm, and leave out anything we could not confirm. Always check how ages and headcounts are counted when you book.
Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and Tenjin FAQ
We have a 1-year-old. Do we need a child seat for a taxi from Fukuoka Airport?
Legally, no. Taxis are exempt from the child-seat rule for children under 6. If you want one, you need to book rather than pick a taxi up at the rank. Fukuoka MK Taxi's airport transfer plan rents child seats from ¥3,300 a day (official listing). Otherwise, book a transfer vehicle where you can choose a child seat, or bring your own. 5 adults and a toddler will not fit in one standard taxi, which usually takes 4, so it is two cars, a jumbo taxi or a transfer.
Do toddlers pay on the bus?
It depends on the company. On Nishitetsu local buses, children aged 1 to under 6 ride free, up to 2 per accompanying passenger; on its expressway buses, 1 rides free. On the Airport Express to Tenjin, the first toddler is free, and the child fare applies if they use a seat. On HEARTS, under-4s are free, but the child fare applies if they use a seat. On the subway, preschoolers with a parent or guardian ride free, however many.
How many suitcases can we bring?
Nishitetsu local buses take luggage within 63 × 63 × 63 cm or 100 × 50 × 50 cm, but ask passengers not to bring several wheeled cases aboard. The Airport Express takes bags in its luggage hold. On the subway, each piece up to 250 cm in total length + width + height and 30 kg is free, and no limit on the number is stated (you may be turned away in the rush). We could not find an official size rule for HEARTS.
Is a 1-day pass worth it?
For one way from the airport to Hakata or Tenjin, ordinary tickets (¥1,300 for 6) are cheaper. The subway 1-day pass is ¥640 for adults and ¥320 for elementary-school children.
On a late flight or a heavy-luggage day, book a transfer first
Direct buses finish between late afternoon and evening. A transfer takes 6 people and their suitcases in one vehicle, from the terminal to the door of your stay.
For subway times and fares, see the Fukuoka City Subway official site (not an affiliate).
Prices change with the number of people and the vehicle type. Enter 6 passengers and your number of bags on the booking screen to check.
