The question isn't the airport — it's how you buy the ticket.
Fly into the same airport and the total for a family of six still moves by more than ¥10,000 depending on how you buy. And for a large family the right answer is to buy different tickets for adults and children, because the set ticket carries no child discount.

First, the airportFukuoka for frequency, Oita for proximity
Oita Airport is far closer; Fukuoka Airport has far more flights and destinations.
- From Oita Airport — the "Airliner" bus runs straight to Beppu Station. ¥1,600 adults, ¥800 children (one way)
- From Fukuoka Airport — the "Toyonokuni" highway coach to Beppu. 10 return services a day, every 60 to 90 minutes
- Every Toyonokuni service is reserved-seat only and must be booked. Booking opens at 08:00 on the same date of the previous month
- The "nonstop" service to Beppu does call at Fukuoka Airport's international terminal (the faster Oita-bound service only calls there on some departures, so don't confuse the two)
Most families arriving from overseas will find Fukuoka Airport the realistic entry point, given the choice of routes. Everything below is priced from Fukuoka Airport.
The single most useful thing hereStaying in Kannawa? Don't get off at Beppu Station
The Toyonokuni nonstop service calls at "Kannawa-guchi". The official site for the Hells of Beppu also directs visitors to "get off the highway bus at Kannawa-guchi; it is a short walk".
If you are staying in Kannawa, you do not need to change to a local bus at Beppu Station. For a family hauling luggage and a pushchair, removing a single transfer makes a surprising difference. Stops verified on the Nishi-Nippon Railroad official site (as of Aug 2026).
Airport to lodging with zero transfers Official
Board at Fukuoka Airport's international terminal, get off at Kannawa-guchi. One vehicle from immigration to your door. No wrestling suitcases through a change at Beppu Station with five or more people.
Claim six seats the morning they open
Seats are assigned, so no seat means no ride. Booking opens at 08:00 on the same date of the previous month. The bigger the family, the earlier you need to act.
Check the stops before you book a room
Ride all the way to Beppu Kitahama and you have to double back to Kannawa. Decide your lodging and your stop together (see our stay guide).
Coach vs limited express, priced for six
The coach is cheapest, the train fastest. Multiply by the headcount and the gap opens up.

- Return, and that gap doubles
- The Sonic departs from Hakata Station, so from Fukuoka Airport you also have the subway hop to Hakata
- The coach leaves from the airport bus terminal, cutting the number of times you carry bags up stairs or across platforms
* Sonic fares are a guide for the ordinary season (reserved seats cost more in peak periods).
Not knowing about the "Trip Ticket" costs each adult ¥2,100
Kamenoi Bus, Nishitetsu and Hita Bus jointly sell a set ticket at ¥7,200. For adults, that is the answer.
- It contains (1) a return highway coach between Fukuoka and Beppu (or Yufuin) and (2) "My Beppu Free", two days of unlimited local buses around Beppu and Yufuin
- Bought separately at ordinary fares that is ¥6,500 return plus a 2-day wide pass — about ¥9,300 in total
- Which means roughly ¥2,100 saved per adult
- On sale at Fukuoka Airport Bus Terminal, Hakata Bus Terminal and Nishitetsu Tenjin Highway Bus Terminal. The coach still needs a reservation
- If you prefer singles, there is also a web multi-ride ticket. Beppu services are included: four rides for ¥10,000 (¥2,500 each, valid three months including the day of purchase)

The official notice states plainly that there is no child or disability discount. Children pay ¥7,200 too. A single Toyonokuni child fare, meanwhile, is ¥1,630 one way — ¥3,260 return. So buying a Trip Ticket for a child loses you money, every time. For four adults, four Trip Tickets come to ¥28,800 (children are not included in that figure).

Ruling something outWhy the SUNQ Pass is usually the wrong call here
It is the famous unlimited-bus pass for Kyushu, but for a big family based in Beppu it works out expensive.
- The 3-day pass for northern Kyushu plus Shimonoseki is about ¥9,000. For six people that is over ¥50,000
- Children aged 12 and over pay the adult rate, which hurts larger families most
- Holders of a Japanese passport are not eligible
- Infants without a seat travel free. Some highway services still require a seat reservation
- It pays off on itineraries that range widely across Kyushu. For Beppu and Yufuin alone, the Trip Ticket comes out cheaper
Going well beyond Beppu? Then SUNQ starts to make sense
If your route takes in Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Beppu, the maths flips. Check the coverage map and price before you decide — and remember that from age 12 there is no child rate.

Coming via Tokyo or Osaka
A domestic flight is the realistic way into Kyushu. Overland is simply too long for a large family.
- Fly to Fukuoka or Oita from Haneda, Narita, Itami or Kansai, then pick up the steps above
- The shinkansen from Tokyo to Hakata is possible but takes around five hours. With children, two hours in the air is usually the lighter option
For getting around once you arrive: the Kamenoi Bus day pass
Beppu Station to Kannawa, and the Hells of Beppu, are all Kamenoi Bus. Buy through Klook and you can collect it at the HIS counter in Fukuoka Airport, so it is in your hand as soon as you land.

Where can I buy the Trip Ticket?
At Fukuoka Airport Bus Terminal, Hakata Bus Terminal and Nishitetsu Tenjin Highway Bus Terminal. The coach itself needs a reservation, so secure your seats first. You can book through the Kyushu Highway Bus reservation centre or online.
I heard bus fares change in September 2026.
The revision on 1 September 2026 applies to the Oita service (Super Nonstop). The official notice states that fares on the Beppu nonstop are unchanged. There is a timetable revision on the same day, though, so check departure times before you travel.
We have a lot of luggage. Will it go on the coach?
Highway coaches take luggage in the hold. With six people's suitcases, though, sending them ahead to your lodging makes the journey far easier. Unstaffed properties sometimes cannot receive deliveries, so check with them first.
Where should we book a room?
Kannawa puts the Hells of Beppu within bus range and lets you arrive directly from the "Kannawa-guchi" coach stop. Futons on a tatami room sleep five to seven in one space, so finding a room is easier than in a big city.
What you buy at a counter, and what you can buy now
The Trip Ticket is bought at a bus terminal counter on the Fukuoka side (set ticket for adults, singles for children). The day pass you will use all week, though, can be sorted before you leave home.
