After the July 2026 earthquake
In short: on July 28, 2026, Kumamoto Prefecture had an earthquake of up to shindo 7 (the top of Japan's intensity scale), but the city tram was running the day after (as of October 12, 2026, the Transportation Bureau's site shows no suspension notice), and Kumamoto Castle reopened on August 13. As of October 12, 2026, neither of this article's two places had a closure notice on its Rakuten listing, and both were taking bookings for November and January.
1. Check the listing Rakuten listing

Prices are a record of the search day
These are the values Rakuten Travel returned for 6 adults, 1 room, 1 night on October 17, 2026. Prices and availability change with the date and the room.
The cheapest room changes by day
The table shows the cheapest plan of each day, and the room type differs by day. For these 2 days we also listed the futon rooms, but for other days check on the booking screen.
Check child rates on the booking screen
Searching for 4 adults + 2 elementary-school children returned the same amount as 6 adults, but both listings say "child rates available".
fav Kumamoto's kitchen is described two ways
The plan list says "kitchen", while the facilities section says "mini kitchen (some rooms, reservation required)". If you plan to cook, check with the hotel before booking.
Tomaru.'s walk from the tram stop is listed as both 1 and 3 minutes
That is why we say "a few minutes". We did not walk it and time it ourselves.
Whether 2 can sleep on the sofa bed is unknown
For the sofa beds in Tomaru.'s Family Suite and others, the listing does not say how many people they sleep. We recommend the futon room, where it can be confirmed that all 6 can lie down.
Kumamoto stays for big families: FAQ
Are there hotels in Kumamoto where 6 can share one room?
Yes. Within walking distance of city tram stops, fav Kumamoto (35㎡, up to 6) and Tomaru. Kumamoto (45㎡, up to 6) have rooms with a bed or futon for all 6 (Rakuten Travel listings, as of October 2026). For 7 or more, there are THE TORII (up to 12) and Family House 1F (up to 8).
Is a hotel with no reception OK?
Tomaru. Kumamoto is unstaffed; you check in yourself following the instructions emailed after booking. If you are unsure about instructions in Japanese, or want someone to rely on late at night, fav Kumamoto with its front desk suits you better (though fav is also unstaffed from 10 pm to 7 am, and the entrance uses a PIN code).
Is it better to stay near Kumamoto Station or near Kumamoto Castle?
Gofukumachi and Kawaramachi, where this article's two places are, lie between Kumamoto Station and the castle. Kumamoto Station is 6–9 minutes by city tram and Kumamoto-jo/Shiyakusho-mae 11–12 minutes, so it is easy to get around whether you arrive by shinkansen or by airport bus.
After Aso, for the last night before flying to Okinawa, is Kumamoto or Fukuoka better?
Kumamoto, if you can fly from Aso Kumamoto Airport. The airport limousine bus takes about 40 minutes from Torichosuji and about 60–65 minutes from Kumamoto Station (¥1,400 per adult). If you fly from Fukuoka Airport, it is about 2 hours by bus from Kumamoto, or about 1 hour by shinkansen and subway, so staying in Fukuoka the night before makes the morning easier.

fav Kumamoto if you arrive late or want a desk; Tomaru. Kumamoto for space, a kitchen and a dryer.
