From the airport, the bus is cheapest and takes about 40 min, like a taxi.
From Hakata, the cheap bus is about an hour slower.
From Aso Kumamoto Airport to the area around Kumamoto Castle (Torichosuji), the airport limousine bus's special rapid service takes about 40 minutes and costs ¥7,000 for 6. 6 people do not fit in one taxi, so 2 taxis cost about ¥11,200, and take the same 40 minutes or so. From Hakata it is the other way round: the cheapest option, the highway bus (¥11,250 for 6), takes about 2 hours, while the shinkansen and city tram take about 1 hour on the fast trains (¥27,540 for 6) (calculated from official fares and a fare search site as of October 12, 2026).

From Aso Kumamoto AirportFrom the airport, the bus is cheapest and as fast as a taxi
In short: the airport limousine bus's special rapid service takes about 40 minutes to Torichosuji. A taxi also takes about 40 minutes, so for 6 there is no reason to pay for 2 taxis.
The amounts in this article are for a family of 6: a couple, 2 children (elementary-school age) and grandparents (4 adults + 2 elementary-school children). The grandparents are calculated at the adult fare.
| Option | Changes | To Torichosuji | To Kumamoto Station | Fare for 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport limousine bus, special rapid | None | About 40 min | — | ¥7,000 |
| Airport limousine bus, regular service | None | About 50 min | About 60–65 min | ¥7,000 |
| 2 taxis (estimate) | None | About 40 min | About 45 min | Torichosuji about ¥11,200 / Kumamoto Station about ¥12,200 |
The bus is ¥1,400 per adult (from August 1, 2026). By rule, elementary-school children pay half the adult fare, ¥700. The taxi amount is the airport's official estimate (as of September 1, 2026, expressway tolls extra) for 2 taxis. To Kumamoto Station, the regular service takes about 60–65 minutes (the airport says 65 minutes, the bus operator about 60).
- The airport limousine bus takes no reservations and has a fixed number of seats; you board in the order you queued. The special rapid service leaves from stop 3 and the regular service from stop 4.
- The bus operator warns that on days with events in Kumamoto and during long holidays it gets crowded and you may not get on the bus you want (notice of October 1, 2026). If 6 of you are queuing, get to the stop early.
- There are 31 special rapid services a day, 41 services to and from Kumamoto Station, and so on (both weekdays and weekends).
- You can buy tickets to Kumamoto City at the ticket machine inside the airport. Buying all 6 in advance saves a rush when you board.
- Transport IC cards such as Suica cannot be used (since November 2024). You can pay by contactless credit card and similar, by the Kumamon IC card, or in cash.
- There is luggage space on board (it varies by vehicle).
- Preschool children ride free, up to 1 per adult or elementary-school child, on a lap. A seat of their own needs a child fare.
- If your hotel is near Kumamoto Station, the bus goes round Torichosuji and Sakuramachi and arrives there last, so it takes about 60–65 minutes. This is the only case where the gap with a taxi (about 45 minutes) widens to 15–20 minutes.
A round-trip bus ticket between the airport and the city, with a 1-day unlimited pass
A round-trip bus ticket between Aso Kumamoto Airport and Kumamoto City, with the "WakuWaku 1 Day Pass" (1 day of unlimited rides on local buses, the city tram and the electric railway within its area). The WakuWaku 1 Day Pass cannot be used on the airport limousine bus. Check the type of pass and where to exchange it on the product page.

From Hakata: about 1 hour by shinkansen, about 2 by bus, about ¥16,000 apart
In short: the cheapest way from Hakata is the highway bus, but it arrives 40 minutes to an hour later than the shinkansen and city tram. Choose by the stamina of the grandparents and small children, and by whether that time is worth about ¥16,000 to you.
The condition not shown in the chart is time. The shinkansen is faster and costs about ¥16,000 more for 6.
| Option | Changes | To central Kumamoto | Fare for 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kyushu Shinkansen non-reserved + city tram | 1 (Kumamoto Station) | About 1 hour to 1 hour 20 min (shinkansen 32–50 min + city tram 15–20 min + change) | ¥27,540 |
| Kyushu Shinkansen reserved + city tram | 1 (Kumamoto Station) | As above | ¥30,200 (about +¥1,000 on some days) |
| Hinokuni highway bus (4 adults on the same contactless card) | None | About 2 hours to Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal | ¥11,250 (from October 29, 2026, this discount stops while fares are half price by contactless card) |
| Hinokuni highway bus (cash or separate cards) | None | As above | ¥12,500 |
The shinkansen from Hakata to Kumamoto is ¥5,310 per adult (non-reserved) and ¥2,650 per elementary-school child; the city tram from Kumamoto Station to the castle area is ¥200 per adult and ¥100 per elementary-school child (fare search site and Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau, October 12, 2026). Hinokuni is ¥2,500 per adult between Kumamoto Sakuramachi and Hakata (Kyushu Sanko Bus fare table), and half that for elementary-school children.
| Party (breakdown) | Shinkansen non-reserved + city tram | Hinokuni (same card) | Airport limousine bus | Taxi from the airport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 (4 adults + 1 elementary-school child) | ¥24,790 | ¥10,000 | ¥6,300 | 2 taxis, about ¥11,200 |
| 6 (4 adults + 2 elementary-school children) | ¥27,540 | ¥11,250 | ¥7,000 | 2 taxis, about ¥11,200 |
| 7 (4 adults + 3 elementary-school children) | ¥30,290 | ¥12,500 | ¥7,700 | 2 taxis, about ¥11,200 |
If your family is made up differently: if one of the 2 children is a preschooler, the shinkansen and city tram are free for them (¥24,790 for 6); Hinokuni is free for up to 1 child per accompanying passenger on a lap (¥10,000 paying with the same card); and the airport bus is ¥6,300 with the child on a lap or ¥7,000 with a seat.
- When searched on October 12, 2026, there were 55 shinkansen a day from Hakata to Kumamoto: Mizuho 32–36 min, Sakura about 38 min, Tsubame 48–50 min.
- JR Kyushu's online early-booking discounts narrow the gap with the bus (prices vary by day).
- Whether 6 can sit together in non-reserved seats depends on how crowded it is. Reserved seats cost about ¥2,700 more for 6.
- On Hinokuni, if you ride the same route 4 times within 30 days with the same contactless card, the 4th ride is half the adult fare. However many people you pay for with one card, each person counts, so paying for 4 adults with one card makes the 4th adult half price that same day (elementary-school children are not included). Contactless payment on a smartphone and the physical card count as different cards.
- From October 29, 2026, while fares are half price by contactless card, this "4th ride half price" discount stops (no end date announced; Kyushu Sanko Bus said on October 14, 2026 that it will end when the budget runs out). During that time, paying by contactless card halves the fare-table fares of ¥2,500 per adult and ¥1,250 per elementary-school child, making about ¥6,250 for 6 (calculated as ¥1,250 × 4 + ¥625 × 2). One card can pay for any number of people. The airport limousine bus is not part of this half-fare campaign.
- Some Hinokuni services need a reservation (from 1 month before the day). They have a toilet and Wi-Fi. Suica and similar cards work on Nishitetsu-run services but not on Sanko-run services, so plan to pay by contactless card or cash.
- JR Kyushu's rail pass for visitors (Northern Kyushu, 3 days, ¥15,000 per adult) costs more than a non-reserved round trip (¥10,620) if all you do is Hakata ⇔ Kumamoto and back. Consider it when you also use JR for other trips, such as to Aso or Beppu.
- If you land at Fukuoka Airport, there is also a Hinokuni service straight from Fukuoka Airport to Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal without going via Hakata (about 2 hours to 2 hours 15 min, depending on the service). If you take the shinkansen, for getting from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata see Fukuoka Airport to Hakata & Tenjin for 6: Subway for ¥1,300.
Where you arrive changes which hotels are close
In short: the airport bus and highway bus arrive in the castle area (Torichosuji, Sakuramachi), and the shinkansen arrives at Kumamoto Station. If you stay between Kumamoto Station and the castle (Gofukumachi, Kawaramachi), it is about 10 minutes by city tram whichever way you arrive.
From Aso Kumamoto Airport to Torichosuji by the airport limousine bus's special rapid service.
Riding on to Kumamoto Station takes about 60–65 minutes. If you arrive at Kumamoto Station by shinkansen, the castle area is about 15–20 minutes by city tram.
- From Kumamoto Station to the area around Kumamoto Castle after arriving by shinkansen is about 15–20 minutes by city tram (the Transportation Bureau says about 15 minutes to Kumamoto-jo/Shiyakusho-mae and about 19 minutes to Torichosuji).
- Places between Kumamoto Station and the castle where 6 can share one room are in Kumamoto for 6 in one room: fav Kumamoto or Tomaru. (45㎡)?.
Getting around by city tram: Suica works, and you can pay for 6 at once
In short: the Kumamoto city tram takes transport IC cards, and one card can pay for any number of people. When you get off, tell the crew how many you are before you tap the card.
1. Flat fare: ¥1,000 one-way for 6 Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau
¥200 for adults (junior high school and up), ¥100 for elementary-school children. Preschoolers ride free, up to 1 per accompanying passenger of elementary-school age or older.
2. Board by the middle or rear door Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau
You pay when you get off. No change is given for cash (only ¥1,000 notes can be changed on board).
3. The 1-day pass pays off in 3–4 rides Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau
3 rides with the smartphone mobile pass (¥500 adults, ¥250 elementary-school children), or 4 with the paper pass (¥700 adults, ¥350 elementary-school children). City tram only; not valid on buses.
From October 29, 2026, the city tram also has a period when fares are half price by contactless card (no end date announced). During that time, paying by contactless card makes it ¥500 one-way for 6 (calculated by halving ¥200 per adult and ¥100 per elementary-school child; Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau notice). When paying for children or for several people with one card, tell the crew before you tap. What is halved is the fare you pay by contactless card each ride; the 1-day pass is not listed as included. During that time an adult ride is ¥100, so it takes 5 rides for the mobile pass (¥500 per adult) to pay off.

Honest notes
These are things we have not been able to verify, so we do not assert them.
The airport bus child fare is calculated from the rules
The bus operator's official fare table lists adults only. The ¥700 for elementary-school children is calculated from the rule that "children pay half the adult fare".
Hinokuni fares are the official examples
We use the examples Kyushu Sanko Bus gives (Kumamoto Station–Hakata and Sakuramachi–Hakata, ¥2,500). They may differ for the section you ride.
Shinkansen fares are from a fare search site
Reserved seats vary by about ¥200 per adult depending on the day. Early-booking prices vary by day, so we have not listed them.
Taxis are the airport's official estimate
Expressway tolls are extra. We could not confirm official prices for jumbo taxis or pre-booked transfers, so we have not listed them.
The city tram's service status is not shown on the Transportation Bureau's site
We confirmed service after the earthquake through news reports. Check the Bureau's service information on the day you ride.
Child-fare categories
Child-fare categories are defined differently by each operator, and the official sites do not always state them. In this article we write only what we could confirm, and leave out anything we could not confirm. Always check how ages and headcounts are counted when you book.
Getting to Kumamoto: FAQ
From Aso Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto City, is a taxi easier for 6?
The time is about the same. The airport limousine bus's special rapid service takes about 40 minutes to Torichosuji, and so does a taxi. 6 people have to split into 2 regular taxis, costing about ¥11,200. By bus it is ¥7,000 for 6 (as of October 2026).
Can we use Suica on the airport bus or the highway bus?
Not on the airport limousine bus. Pay by contactless credit card or similar, by the Kumamon IC card or in cash, or buy tickets first at the airport ticket machine. On the Hinokuni highway bus, Suica and similar cards work on Nishitetsu-run services but not on Sanko-run services, so plan on contactless or cash. The city tram takes Suica and similar cards.
From Hakata to Kumamoto, is the shinkansen or the bus better?
The shinkansen, if you want to arrive early. Hakata → Kumamoto takes 32–50 minutes, and from Kumamoto Station to the castle area is about 15–20 minutes by city tram. The Hinokuni highway bus takes about 2 hours to Kumamoto Sakuramachi, but is about ¥16,000 cheaper for 6.
Is transport running after the July 2026 earthquake?
As of October 12, 2026, the bus operator's site shows the airport limousine bus and Hinokuni as "operating normally"; the Kumamoto city tram was running the day after the earthquake, and the Transportation Bureau's site has no suspension notice. The Kyushu Shinkansen resumed along its whole length on September 18. Check each operator's service information on the day you travel.
From the airport to the city, by bus both ways
