The direct shuttle charges the same ¥5,000 for adults and children. The more children you have, the heavier it lands. The bus between Sapporo and Rusutsu, on the other hand, is free — with the catch that it runs once a day.

Before thatFirst: how you get to New Chitose
New Chitose is an international airport with direct flights from Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok and elsewhere. You can head straight for the resort on arrival. There are also frequent domestic flights from Narita and Haneda, so plenty of families see Tokyo first and come up afterwards.
Either way, the two hours from the airport remain the same problem. What follows is about those two hours.
Option 1The direct shuttle charges children the adult fare
The Big Runs shuttle to Rusutsu costs the same for adults and children. There is no discount that scales with the number of children.
For six: ¥25,000 one way, ¥50,000 return Official
Buy on a booking site before you go and it is ¥5,000; buy at the counter on the day and it is ¥5,500. Both are for one seat, one way. Under 3s ride free on a lap, but everyone else pays the same regardless of age. Two adults + one junior high + two primary + one under 3 makes five seats. It takes 120 minutes, with 8 outbound and 7 return services in the winter season (the previous season ran from 29 November to 31 March).
Book by 24:00, seven days before
This is not a bus you can simply turn up for. The deadline is 24:00 seven days before the day you travel. You need six seats together, so lock them in as soon as your dates are fixed.
It drops you at three hotels
Rusutsu Resort Hotel, the Westin and The Vale Rusutsu are the stops. If you are staying in a whole-house rental nearby, you need to arrange your own way from there to the door (check before booking whether your place runs a free shuttle).
Go via Sapporo and the bus costs nothing
The Rusutsu bus that links Sapporo and Rusutsu is free. In the winter season it runs once each way daily, taking 120 minutes. It leaves from near Kamori Building ③ in Sapporo, a two-minute walk from the south exit of Sapporo Station.
From New Chitose to Sapporo, the Rapid Airport costs ¥1,230 for adults and ¥610 for children, takes about 40 minutes, and runs six times an hour during the day.
JR's fare categories: 12 and over is an adult (though a 12-year-old still in primary school counts as a child), a child is 6 to under 12, and infants under 6 travel free. Note that only two infants ride free per adult; from the third, the child fare applies. Junior high school students are treated as adults.

Knowing this is worth ¥40,000 on the return trip.
But it runs once a day. If your flight lands late, you will not catch it that day. And with a 15:00 deadline the day before, you cannot decide on the spur of the moment either.
Even if it means a night in Sapporo, Sapporo has 163 properties bookable for six adults in one room (measured for a one-night stay on 16 January 2027; the Rusutsu-Niseko area had 19 on the same date). Check availability on the airport shuttle
You need six seats together. The direct shuttle closes at 24:00 seven days before, so once your dates are set, take the seats first.

Fares are roughly ¥3,000 to ¥4,000 as a guide (it varies by operator). They are cheaper than the Rusutsu run and more frequent, so staying on the Niseko side widens your options.
Option 3A rental car comes down to how many are under six
Under Japanese road traffic law, a child seat is the driver's legal obligation for anyone under six (Article 71-3, paragraph 3 of the Road Traffic Act). The same applies to rental cars, and you need one for each child who qualifies.
In Hokkaido most rental companies fit studless winter tyres as standard from late October to early May. That said, if you have never driven on snow, a first time on snow with six people and everyone's luggage aboard is not something we would recommend. Rates swing widely by season, so we are not quoting figures in this article.

"Via Sapporo is cheaper" leaves out the room
The ¥40,000 gap is transport alone. The Rusutsu bus runs once a day, so you may end up spending a night in Sapporo, and that room is extra. Sapporo does have 163 properties taking six in one room (measured for one night on 16 January 2027), so the choice is wide — but "via Sapporo always wins" is not something we can say.
Nothing official states whether skis and snowboards can be carried
Ask the operator you book with directly. If you leave the gear at home and rent on arrival, the worry disappears (see the gear guide).
