Hiroshima's "wall at four"
is not really in the city. The wall is on Miyajima island.

In Hiroshima City, around 50 properties could be booked as one room for six adults. "Five or more means separate rooms" is simply not true here. Yet only 7 properties on Miyajima island itself took eight adults. These are measurements, so that you look in the right place.

The main point

The "wall at four" is a hotel wall, not a Hiroshima wall

Straight to the point. Hiroshima City has around 50 properties bookable as one room for six adults. If you have read that "hotels in Hiroshima only take four" and started planning around splitting the family across two rooms, you do not need that assumption — at least not in Hiroshima.

We counted, on Rakuten Travel, how many properties could actually be booked under identical conditions (one night, one room, N adults), as measured on 31 August 2026.

On both dates, tripling the party from two to six still leaves around 30 per cent of the options. The order of magnitude does not move. That said, those 50-odd properties are not hotel rooms in business or city hotels. They are whole-house rentals, residence-style apartments, whole-floor lets and vacation rentals — accommodation outside "hotels" (judging from the property and room names).

In other words, the "wall at four" is really a matter of how hotel rooms are designed. Search only inside hotels and you hit it; change where you look and it stops being a wall. The same structure appears in Hokkaido: our guide to one-room stays for large families in Niseko and Rusutsu tells the same "outside the hotels" story.

The wall that is easy to miss

The real wall is on Miyajima island

We checked 14 dates at fortnightly intervals from 7 September 2026 (through to 8 March 2027), one night, one room. Among properties whose address is "Miyajima-cho, Hatsukaichi City", only 7 could be booked as one room for eight adults.

It is Miyajima island. 14 dates at fortnightly intervals from 7 September 2026, one night, one room (measured 31 August 2026) Hiroshima City · 6 adults 69 Hiroshima City · 8 adults 34 Hatsukaichi City · 6 adults 39 Hatsukaichi City · 8 adults 19 Miyajima island · 6 adults 15 Miyajima island · 8 adults 7

The number of properties that came up at least once across the 14 dates (measured 31 August 2026). Hiroshima City has 69 for six adults, against 15 on Miyajima island. Raise it to eight and the island falls to 7. Searching for the "Miyajima / Miyajimaguchi area" mixes in the whole of Hatsukaichi City, which makes the island look better supplied than it is.

The steadiest availability is at the newer places with the fewest reviews Measured

The island properties that came up on 11 or more of the 14 dates were Miyajima Shiro (13/14), Sorairo Miyajima (12/14) and KIYOMORI (11/14) — all new whole-house or old-townhouse conversions. There is almost nothing in the way of reviews to judge them by.

The higher-rated old establishments have nothing free for six or more

Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto (1,277 reviews, 4.57) came up on 9 of 14, Hotel Miyarikyu (1,046 reviews, 4.2) on 8 of 14 and Iwaso on 4 of 14 — counted as one room for six adults.

A "Miyajima" search mixes in the mainland side

Hatsukaichi City as a whole has 39 properties for six adults and 19 for eight, but the island (Miyajima-cho) alone has 15 for six and 7 for eight. More than half are across the water in Miyajimaguchi or Miyahama Onsen.

Which one?

Base yourself in the city, or sleep on the island

Both take six to eight people in one room. But there is a gap of about 55,000 yen per night. Do not decide on "the island, for the atmosphere" while leaving that vague.

The difference is 54,696 yen for one night (six adults). Two nights and it is about 110,000 yen. What sleeping on the island buys you is the approach after the day trippers have left, and the sea in the morning. You cannot buy that from a city hotel. One night on the island and the rest in the city is a realistic split too. Whichever you choose, the island fills first — its inventory runs on single figures.

For those who want to look beyond these two before deciding: you can compare properties in Hiroshima City and around Miyajima on a map. The island's stock is in single figures, so the map shows you directly where the choices actually are.

The island property is also listed on Agoda. The Garden Place Hiroshima in the city has no inventory on Agoda, so for that one it is Rakuten Travel only.

Honest caveats: before you press "book"

These two suit large families, but here is everything up front — including what we could not verify.

1

Whether a child sharing a bed counts towards capacity depends on the plan

Whether "maximum 10 guests" is counted in adults, or includes children sharing bedding, varies with the conditions of the plan. We cannot state it definitively, so check with the property before booking. Declaring the wrong number can leave you unable to check in on the day.

2

Check the last ferry to the island before you check the accommodation

Sorairo Miyajima has 24-hour self check-in, so you are not tied to a reception desk's hours — but you are tied to the last boat across. On an itinerary that arrives at night, the deadline is the ferry, not the property. Boat times and fares are in Getting from Kyoto and Osaka to Hiroshima and Miyajima.

3

We did not pick the main recommendation for its track record

The Garden Place Hiroshima has 13 reviews (4.67). This article puts it forward because its capacity is stated explicitly in the room name and it is genuinely available, not because of a long track record. Under the same conditions, Grand Base Hiroshima Peace Park (5.0, 35 reviews), five minutes' walk from the Peace Memorial Park, was also available on 12 of 14 dates — but we could not confirm the room capacity in official wording (only "Family", 58 m²), so we mention it as a comparison candidate and no more.

4

The island property has only two reviews

We put Sorairo Miyajima forward because six to eight guests can book it directly and its availability is steady (12 of 14 dates). It has 2 reviews (5.00), and we are recommending it knowing that is thin evidence. The island simply does not have enough properties to choose by track record.

The steadiest availability of all was Miyajima Shiro (13/14), but there parties of six or more cannot complete a booking through Rakuten's booking button and must contact the property (verified 6 September 2026). We cannot recommend that to this article's readers as it stands, so it is not our secondary pick. KIYOMORI (11/14) is another option.

5

Both properties are unstaffed. There is no front desk to ask

The Garden Place Hiroshima is an unstaffed property, and check-in instructions arrive by email after you book. Sorairo Miyajima is also completely unstaffed, with contactless check-in via a tablet. Do not expect front-desk services such as storing luggage or asking for directions. If this is your first visit to Japan and you are unsure about the language, share this with the family in advance.

6

The prices and counts here are "what could be booked at that moment"

They are not totals of rooms. Change the dates and they move. While researching another cluster (Kawaguchiko), the price of the same room on the same dates moved by 4,250 yen in five days. The figures above were measured on 6 September 2026 and are not the price you will pay. Note also that the main recommendation had a limited-time sale running at the time, so it was actually showing about 10 per cent cheaper than this.

Answering your questions

Hiroshima and Miyajima accommodation FAQ for large families

Can a family of five or more really share one room in Hiroshima?

Yes. On the two dates we checked, 44 and 50 properties were bookable as one room for six adults (one night, one room, Rakuten Travel, as of 6 September 2026). Most, though, are whole-house or residence-style rentals — you will not find them by searching inside business hotels.

Is it better to stay on Miyajima or commute from the city?

It comes down to how you view a gap of about 55,000 yen per night (six adults). Island properties number in single figures and fill first, so if you decide to sleep there, move earlier than you would for the city. How to build the boats and the timing for a day trip is in Getting from Kyoto and Osaka to Hiroshima and Miyajima.

We would like to stay at a long-established ryokan. Can we get in?

For six or more, our measurements say it is hard. Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto came up on 9 of 14 dates, Hotel Miyarikyu on 8 and Iwaso on 4 (as one room for six adults). They become an option if you accept splitting into two rooms with fewer people in each.

On the day we visit the Peace Memorial Park, where is easiest to stay?

Around the Hiroden "Shiyakusho-mae" or "Kamiyacho" stops puts the park within walking distance. How to combine museum visiting times with the tide is covered in our one-day plan for the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima.

The wall is not in the city — it is on the island

In the city, around 50 properties take six adults in one room (from 7,480 yen per person). On the island there are only 7 for eight. If you have decided to sleep there, move earlier than you would for the city.

Prices change with the date, so check the booking page for current information. Always declare the age of every guest when you book.
