The deciding points: ferry day trips and a hire car

In short: Taketomi and Iriomote are reached by boat from the outer-island ferry terminal at Ishigaki Port, and hire cars cannot go on the high-speed boats. The more ferry days you have, the easier it is to stay in town within walking distance of the terminal.

• For the airport, the eastern side out of town (seven x seven in Maezato) is closer, about 1.5–1.7 km shorter in a straight line than the 3 places in town. Royal Marine Palace, in Arakawa on the western side, is about 1 km further from the airport than the town.
• According to the hotels' listings, it takes about 30 minutes by car or bus from the airport to the hotels in town.

In town: 3 places with a room for 6 within walking distance of the ferry terminal

In short: the places where we could check the bedding are THIRD Ishigakijima, Sky Kukuru Ishigakijima and Imakoko hotel. The easiest on ferry mornings is THIRD, right in front of the terminal.

• At Imakoko, a family with grandparents and large luggage will be climbing stairs to the 4th floor. The same hotel's other room for 6 (the camping-style room) has 2 of the 6 sleeping in a tent and a hammock, so we do not recommend it here.
• With conditions: HOTEL SPICE+'s Starry Night Room (146.8 m², 4 bedrooms, kitchen, sauna, planetarium) is large, but the number of beds in the semi-double bedroom and the number of futons in the tatami room cannot be confirmed from the listing. Rakuten Travel's plans go up to 3 nights, and on some booking sites you cannot book 4 nights as one reservation. It is an unstaffed hotel: you cannot leave luggage, and you cannot get in before 15:00.
• Left out: places where the only option for 6 adults is two rooms joined by a door (Minami no Churahana Hotel Miyahira and Art Hotel Ishigakijima), and rooms where 6 sleep on three 120 cm-wide beds.

Out of town: about 2.7–2.8 km from the terminal, large rooms with separate bedrooms

In short: for families who want separate bedrooms from the grandparents and will drive around the island, a 3-bedroom suite out of town suits. The trade-off is that on ferry days you go to the terminal by car or taxi.

• Royal Marine Palace also has the Excellent Suite, 4 bedrooms (135 m², 8 beds), which sleeps up to 8.
• Whether you can cook in the Royal Marine Palace kitchen cannot be confirmed from the Rakuten listing (every room has a microwave).
• Left out: a detached house where bedding for 6 could not be confirmed from the listing (Oriental Villa). HOTEL KINJO Suns (Maezato), which has large rooms, had no room for 6 available on any of the 3 spring-break dates we searched in October 2026.

Edge of town: a whole house that works with or without a car

In short: coco stay, about 1.4 km from the terminal in a straight line, has free parking, yet its listing says the outer-island ferry terminal is within walking distance. It is the middle option for families mixing days with a hire car and days without.

• coco stay ishigaki (Shin'eicho): a whole house with 4 bedrooms. The 4 bedrooms have beds and futons, enough bedding for 6. Kitchen and washing machine, 2 free parking spaces (no booking needed). Self check-in from 16:00.
• The property writes that the price may stay the same even if your party gets smaller after booking.
• Left out: the tatami rooms (20 and 25 tatami mats) at Hotel Kaiho Ishigakijima, at a similar distance, because the number of futons is not clear from the listing.

Some places cost more at spring break than on a January weekday. From February 2027, accommodation tax too

In short: for 6 for one night at spring break, some places charge more for the same room than on a January weekday (THIRD about 1.75 times). From February 2027, Okinawa Prefecture and Ishigaki City accommodation taxes are added as well: at the spring-break prices of the places in the table, budget roughly ¥2,400 to ¥6,700 for 6 people over 4 nights.

The amounts in this article assume a family of 6: a couple, 2 children (elementary-school age) and 2 grandparents. Prices, however, are what Rakuten Travel showed when searched as "6 adults".

• seven x seven did not show this room for 20 March, so its figure is for 26 March (Fri).
• Imakoko's price includes the property's 16% booking fee.
• THIRD's cheapest plan cannot be cancelled. Plans that can be cancelled are priced differently.

• Ishigaki City's share is described as "scheduled to take effect" in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' announcement.
• Whether Rakuten's prices include the accommodation tax could not be confirmed, because the tax has not started yet. Check with the property when you book.

If your party is different: if the children are preschoolers, sharing a bed is free at THIRD, and free for up to 3 children aged 0–5 at Royal Marine Palace. From junior-high age, THIRD charges the adult rate. The grandparents are counted at the adult rate (check each property's booking screen for any senior rate).

• Large luggage: on ferry day trips, it is easiest to leave the suitcases at the hotel. Some places do not keep luggage (SPICE+).

Which places work for the children and grandparents on a rainy day

In short: we could not find an Ishigaki hotel with an indoor pool usable all year in Rakuten's facility listings. To be ready for rain, the realistic choice is a large room with a living area.

• Among the facility listings of 342 properties in Ishigaki City on Rakuten Travel, none showed an "indoor pool"; pools were listed as "outdoor pool", "summer only" or "all year" (as of October 2026).
• One exception: "Kaiho Fusaki Honkan", an annex of Hotel Kaiho Ishigakijima (a whole-house rental about 5.6 km from the outer-island ferry terminal in a straight line), lists an indoor pool. But it can only be used April to October, at ¥22,000 per group (tax included), booked by phone at least 3 days ahead. It cannot be used at spring break in March.
• The easiest rooms to spend time in are the 120 m² maisonette (Royal Marine Palace), the 4-bedroom whole house (coco stay) and the 3DK (Sky Kukuru). HOTEL SPICE+'s Starry Night Room has a sauna and a planetarium.
